FALL

Fall brings to mind colorful leaves fluttering off of tall trees, the sweet smell of a baked apple pie, hiking through the woods on a brisk day, finding that perfect pumpkin for carving, and hunting for deer or wild turkey. Travel to Maine to experience Fall in its truest sense.

There are a variety of activities for you to enjoy during your stay at the Call of the Loon cabin at Thompson Lake during the Fall season.  Highlighted below are but a handful of suggestions.

Hiking
Hiking can really be enjoyed any season. Numerous trails exist in the area. There are hikes for families with small children on up to more strenuous trips for the advanced hikers. If you need help selecting a hike you can contact the Chamber of Commerce where volunteers can assist you in selecting an appropriate trek.  Nearby Pleasant Mountain has several good trails depending on the level of difficulty that interests you. It is claimed that from the top you can view, on a clear day, over fifty lakes and ponds.  You will also get a great view of Mount Washington.

Biking
Biking is another popular activity that can be enjoyed most of the year. In large part you will bicycle on or near public roads. The area is somewhat hilly with few stretches of flat traveling.  Some trails used by ATV’s and snow mobiles can be used.

Apple picking
Maine’s apple harvesting season begins in late August and usually lasts through October. The warm summer days, cool autumn nights and healthy winter season make Maine apples extra juicy, crisp and full of flavor.  Maine is known for producing New England’s finest apples! Pick your own or buy some already picked.

Leef peeping
Maine’s fall foliage is truly a wonder to behold.  The vibrant colors of the landscape are a must to see during the fall season.  When planning your next “leaf peeping” trip you can check out the official Maine web site for fall foliage updates which is http://www.mainefoliage.com.

Hunting
The fall hunting seasons have already begun! Residents and nonresidents may obtain licenses and registrations from license agents throughout the state (sporting goods stores, many convenience stores, and town clerks), online from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife web site, or by mail from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife office in Augusta, ME.

For information about the 2005 Maine hunting seasons visit the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife at www.state.me.us/ifw/index.html.

Antiquing
If you are searching for a unique item for your home - embark on an antiquing expedition.  There are several antique shops in the area. You won’t be disappointed.

Theatre
The Deertrees Theatre & Cultural Center is located in nearby Harrison, Maine.  Check out their website
www.deertreestheatre.org/SCHEDULE.htm for scheduling information.

Pick-your-own Maine Christmas tree
With countless tree farms located around the state, it has never been easier for your family to come and pick-your-own Maine Christmas tree.  Generally the season for picking your own tree runs from November 15, 2005-December 24, 2005. For more information you can contact the Maine Department of Agriculture in Augusta, Maine at 207-287-3491.

Fall Festivals
There are quite a few fall festivals including the Annual Fryeburg Fair. It is a week long event that usually starts at the beginning of October in Fryeburg, Maine. This is Maine’s largest agricultural fair featuring exhibit halls, museum, harness racing and livestock shows.  For more information you can check out their website at
www.fryeburgfair.com. Another recommendation is the Annual Bethel Harvest Fest usually scheduled in September in Bethel, ME.  It is an old-fashioned fun fall festival including arts and crafts, “chowdah” cook-off, apple pie contest, demonstrations, wood-carving, hiking, biking, canoeing, apple picking, plenty of food, guided & self –guided bike tours and more.  For more information check out their website at www.bethelmaine.com.

Fall is a truly spectacular time of year in Maine. Come visit and enjoy the colorful beauty of the season.  Call of the Loon cabin would also be an ideal location to host your family’s next Thanksgiving celebration!  Contact us to make a reservation.
